Shelter Brickworks

The storm is almost here!
Will your shelter make it through?

In this hands-on STEM learning experience, students take on the role of engineers and problem-solvers. Using a variety of building bricks and materials, they work in small teams to design and build miniature shelters strong enough to withstand the fierce Storm Supreme. Each team must meet specific design requirements: shelters must stay within a set budget, be built to withstand simulated weather conditions, and follow clear construction guidelines. These real-world constraints encourage students to think critically, plan ahead, and make thoughtful design choices. Throughout the challenge, students explore concepts like structural stability, money sense, and teamwork, while also discussing how material choices and sustainability can affect the outcome. The experience supports communication, collaboration, and resilience—essential skills for young learners engaging with STEM and design thinking in meaningful ways.

Activities

Working in small teams, students will:

Design and build miniature shelters using a variety of building bricks and materials, meeting specific budget, weather, and construction requirements.
Work together to solve design challenges, sharing ideas and making group decisions.
Explore shapes and building techniques to understand what makes structures strong and stable.
Develop awareness of materials and their impact, discussing the role of sustainability and how thoughtful selection of materials can improve both environmental impact and shelter performance.
Test their shelters under “storm” conditions, observing how their designs respond to challenges, and revise their designs.
Reflect on the process and outcomes, using critical thinking and discussion to explore what worked, what didn’t, and why, evaluating the success of their build.

Scope of Learning

Together we’ll select the learning outcomes that best suit your class and grade level curriculum requirements. Examples include;

Identify and apply basic principles of design and construction
Develop and use budgeting and money-handling skills in a practical context
Apply measurement and spatial reasoning to plan and build solutions
Work effectively in teams to solve hands-on challenges
Communicate ideas, reflect on outcomes, and suggest improvements.

Important Information

A large indoor space is required for this program

Our instructor will arrive an hour before your start time to set up

This session runs for 90 minutes

Session capacity: 35-50 (age, ability and space dependent)

We will structure the sessions around your school timetable

Teachers must be present during the session

A minimum 75% deposit must be made 7 days from the date of booking for your incursion to go ahead

You will be invoiced in accordance to your normal student numbers

Please let us know if there are any variations on the day and we will amend the invoice accordingly
