Billy Cart Construction

Get your tools ready for this unique Billy Cart experience!

Students explore the principles of design and engineering in this hands-on Billy Cart building incursion. In teams, they tackle challenges and collaborate to construct and test their carts using provided kits and tools. This practical experience fosters critical thinking as students navigate the assembly process and reflect on their individual and collective strengths. Through the project, students gain valuable insights into construction while developing essential teamwork and problem solving skills.

The 120-minute session provides a dynamic introduction to woodshop tools, with options to extend the experience into a longer-term project.

Activities

Working in small teams, students:

Collaborate to analyse and discuss the design principles of their Billy Cart, applying theoretical knowledge to practical challenges
Utilise a range of tools to construct their Billy Cart, integrating problem-solving skills throughout the building process
Test-drive their newly built carts, applying their understanding of design and engineering to assess performance
Compete in a race to celebrate their successes, reflecting on teamwork and design improvements.

Scope of Learning

Together we’ll select the learning outcomes that best suit your class and grade level curriculum requirements.

Assess personal and team strengths
Discuss strategies that can be used to cope with challenging tasks
Consider materials, tools and equipment through the process of design
Develop criteria for success and evaluate design ideas, process and solutions
Investigate and discuss the interactions between forces and movement.

Important Information

A large unfurnished gymnasium or hall is required for this incursion

Session capacity: up to 40 students

A minimum 75% deposit must be made 7 days from the date of booking for your incursion to go ahead

Our instructor will arrive an hour before your start time to set up

We will structure the sessions around your school timetable

You will be invoiced in accordance to your normal student numbers

This session runs for 120 minutes

Teachers must be present during the session
