Get up and moving with our iconic Billy Cart program!
There’s a reason our Billy Cart program has been our most popular incursion for 15 years! Students investigate the fundamental properties of motion and learn how these influence design and performance. Explore basic forces and learn about the effect gravity and friction have on how things move. Students will be challenged to work in teams to follow set design procedures with complexity adjusted to suit all year levels. Learning is supported through our newly designed pre and post resource packs.
For secondary students, check out our Billy Cart Blitz program here.
Activities
Students rotate through 3 stations.
F-2 students:
- Work collaboratively to create a vehicle out of various materials to gain an understanding of how simple machines contribute to an effective design
- Strengthen teamwork and problem solving skills by following a set of instructions to replicate a set design chosen by our teachers
- Explore the concepts of push and pull while taking turns racing around the Supreme track in our Billy Carts and Ezy-Rollers.
3-6 students:
- Explore the design process by testing and refining a team-designed vehicle, considering how friction and gravity affect its performance
- Think critically about design, and work collaboratively to build a prototype without instructions
-
Burn around the Supreme track in Billy Carts and Ezy-Rollers, while exploring fundamental concepts of motion.
Scope of Learning
Together we’ll select the learning outcomes that best suit class abilities and curriculum requirements. Examples include;
- Identify and describe the influence of push and pull forces
- Identify and analyse the influence of friction, gravity and inertia
- Understand and apply design procedures in the construction of basic machines
- Understand the role of teamwork and leadership in achieving set goals.
